Car insurance claim paid less than the bill? Depreciation, deductible & NCB

When you claim for own damage — your own car repaired after an accident — the insurer rarely pays the whole garage bill. Three standard cuts, all set by the India Motor Tariff, sit between the estimate and your payout.

1. Parts depreciation (IMT GR.9)

Replaced parts are paid at their depreciated value, not their new price. Under IMT GR.9 the standard rates are 50% for rubber, plastic, tyres, batteries and airbags; 30% for fibreglass components; and nil for glass. Metal/other parts depreciate with the vehicle's age. So on a new bumper or a battery, you effectively bear about half the cost.

2. Compulsory deductible (IMT GR.40)

A fixed amount is deducted from every own-damage claim: ₹500 for private cars up to 1500cc, ₹1000 above 1500cc, and ₹50 for two-wheelers (IMT GR.40). If you also chose a voluntary excess for a lower premium, that is deducted on top.

3. Losing your No Claim Bonus (IMT GR.27)

No Claim Bonus rewards claim-free years on own-damage premium — 20%, 25%, 35%, 45%, up to 50% (IMT GR.27). Make an own-damage claim and it's forfeited at your next renewal, dropping back to zero. For a small dent, the NCB you'd lose can cost more than the repair — sometimes it's cheaper not to claim.

Frequently asked

Why isn't my whole repair bill paid on an own-damage claim?

Three tariff cuts apply: parts depreciation (up to 50% on rubber/plastic/tyres/batteries under IMT GR.9), the compulsory deductible (₹500/₹1000/₹50 under GR.40), plus any voluntary excess you chose.

What is the compulsory deductible on a car claim?

Under IMT GR.40 it's ₹500 for private cars up to 1500cc, ₹1000 above 1500cc, and ₹50 for two-wheelers — deducted from every own-damage claim.

Does a small claim cost me my No Claim Bonus?

Yes. Under IMT GR.27, an own-damage claim resets your NCB (which can reach 50%) to zero at the next renewal — so for a minor repair, not claiming is sometimes cheaper.
